As new ways of video marketing continue to grow, it’s time to check in and see if you’re using enough live video at your business.

According to Tubular Insights, viewers spend 8X longer with live video than on-demand: 5.1 minutes for on-demand vs. 42.8 minutes for live video content. As brands compete for eyeballs in the newsfeed, live is a key differentiator.


Below are 4 different ways you can use Facebook live video, Instagram live video, and Periscope live video to engage more with your followers.


1. Teach Them Something

Business are built on expertise. Whether you have an array of amazing products or you provide specialized services to your clients, your business is good at something that most people are not. You can turn that knowledge into content to help gain followers and increase your presence. Live video is a great place to teach your followers something knew, and establish your credibility as an expert in your field.

Coming up with what to teach is the easy part. Let’s break it down. Do you sell a product? If so, what skills and ideas went into the creation of that product? You can take each of these and break it down even further to figure out what to teach your customers.

Here’s an example. Let’s say I own Cindy’s Flower Shop. As a florist I need to know things like:

  • How to cut the bottoms of your flowers to make them last longer
  • What do different flowers mean and why? (Love, Sorrow, etc.)
  • Things to consider when making arrangements

This formula can be used for any business to create live video content, whether product or service based.


2. Q&A Sessions

Most businesses find their inboxes are full of questions. When are you open? What do you put in your tacos? Do you travel to serve clients? Q&A live videos are a great way to answer some of these frequently asked questions and give you a little interaction with your followers.

No I know what you’re thinking, “But what if I do my video and no one comes on to ask questions?” That’s fine! Before you start your video put together a list of questions to get things started. You can also tease your live video in advance to build your list. Spend a week leading up to the video with posts like “Hey guys, what questions do you have about our business that we can answer for you?” Then once you have your list, you can start off answering from this built up list of questions. People will watch to hear your answers and most likely have follow up questions as well!


3. Present Your Products

Presenting your products is one of the biggest sources of content that you can have as a brand. This can include testimonials, tutorials, or before and after videos.


Have a cheerleader for your brand? Put them on camera! Let them rave about how much they love your product and ask them how they use it every day. Getting your customers on camera is a great way to increase engagement. Followers like to see other followers interacting with brands.

Sometimes your product isn’t always easy to get testimonials for. Let’s say you own a restaurant, how do you get your customers to give testimonials about your food? Run a brief promo, and tease it in advance. “On Wednesday only, if you come in during the lunch hour and tell us your favorite order on our livestream we’ll give you $1 off your meal.”

With a little bit of creativity you can come up with many different ideas to show off your customers with live video!

Tutorial sessions can quickly transform into interactive Q&A’s with your followers talking directly with your instructors asking questions and learning more about what makes your products great!


4. Show Your Services

Service-based businesses often struggle with perfecting their inbound marketing. One of the struggles of a service based business is that often, the best parts of your work end up not making it into the spotlight. With live video you can not only show these important parts of your services, but you can show these efforts over time and give followers an idea of what its like to interact with your team.

Here are some ideas of how you can show off your services in live videos:

  • Give tours of your current project
  • Talk through (and show) the steps you took to complete a project
  • Show off some cool equipment
  • Live stream a meeting or brainstorming session
